Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice grill, needs owner modification to be great I got the CB940X after finishing an outdoor kitchen and wanted something nicer looking than my ancient yet trusty Mecco. I've used all sorts of charcoal grills (about 50 years grilling now) and I like the flat bottom ones with adjustable height. This one is so heavy the packaging got banged up (seems to be a common issue), although this one was trucked from the OEM site (winter sale 25% off, free shipping). It really helps for two people to move and put together, the trucker would only drop it in the driveway. Pros, it: - has cast iron grates, which sear and hold temperatures excellently. - seems to hold temperatures except around the edges. - it looks super nice. - it's the most heavy duty material I've owned, excepting a custom made smoker/grill. - the cast iron grill lifting tool is pretty cool, looks nice but I'd be careful about dropping it on concrete. Cons: - the charcoal grid has some major design flaws, FOR THIS PRICE IT SHOULD BE BETTER, coals fall off the end and the heat does not go to the edges well. I grilled a bunch of veggies and kabobs last time and had to keep rotating them around. Come on guys, spend an extra buck and fix this common complaint. At first I thought I was sent a charcoal pan for a smaller grill. - the charcoal grid slants up at the front and back, and coals or small wood lengths won't reside there. - the handles that raise the charcoal grid stick out of the lid when it comes down (at the higher settings) and can get pinched (I just bent them in a bit). - The charcoal handles for raising the grid are just hooks hanging on the charcoal pan wire and there is so much play the grid left to right that occasionally a handle will pop loose from the tray and the charcoal tray will drop down on that side, resulting in charcoal going everywhere and messing up the spread, with a full load cooking on the grill top this seems sub-optimal. - the coal door is just a blazing hot tab, on the cheaper models they have a spring coil handle. - the cast iron grates slide around front to back because of the back edge of the lid leaves slack when opening, this is minor but jostles stuff around. - the side trays that hold the wood carving blocks have round head screws that the wood rests on, they need to be flat heads so the wood surface is stable. - they make less expensive units with an external crank to raise and lower the charcoal grate, this one you have to put on gloves to manually raise the cooking grate. - the venting is unusual, it appears to have rotisserie holes but does not accept one, no lower venting (like on their cheaper units) - no tool hooks, Really? The wood carving blocks are a type Chinese pine, but over there it is a "sacred pine" used in temples because it smells nice. So I've bent the fire raising handles so they don't get stuck, it was easy to bend and did not need much. I want to put a spring covered handle on the fire door like they do with their cheaper models. I want to switch to flat heads that the wood rests on then the wood will be stable. I did add some webbed steel to the edges to keep the coals from falling out and increase usable capacity. I did bend the fire grate handles around the fire grate wire so they have a positive grab and can't jump out. All in all an excellent grill, just needs some tuning

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality of assembled parts needs improving This is the 2nd 940 I have purchased, The first in 1984. I made the purchase because my Dad had one in the 60's (he is also on his 2nd) Mine was kept outdoors and had rusted out in too many places after almost 30 years. After looking for another grill for 6 months, I could not find one locally ( Charbroil or other brands) that would replace my old one with the quality I was looking for (no 940's available locally) . My wife went on line and ordered it from Char-Broil for our anniversary. When I received it I couldn't have been happier. It was made of even heavier duty material than my first. So I expect it to last longer than I will. Unfortunately after putting it together I found the lid of the grill did not match up with the firebox. The lid appeared to not be square. After receiving another lid and eventually a replacement grill, I determined this was a manufacturing problem. The grill lid does not seal properly against the firebox and makes it difficult to impossible to control the airflow for low and slow smoking. I was very disappointed that nothing else could be done. I have used the grill for the past 3 years and everything else about the grill is great, All of the material used were much heavier duty than the original one I had from the tray for ashes, wheels, side trays, firebox and lid. Unfortunately, since I use it mostly for smoking I am still working on getting it sealed better. Since it is so heavy duty, I will be living with this problem for a long time until I can feel comfortable with buying a new grill and giving this one away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Charcoal Grill Ever--- This is my second 940. My first lasted 18 years and I abused it. This one is better than my first one. It's easy to cook on and I use it to grill and smoke. This past weekend I cooked a pork shoulder for 11 hours on Saturday and hamburgers on Sunday. It is easy to access and control the fire and easy to clean up. It has outstanding quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Engineering problems Overall the grill will be as good as the old model after I modify it. Casters that came with unit were not heavy enough for its weight. I installed another pair of large wheels. Unit doesn't draft well, air circulation is at the back of the box, consumes to much charcoal to fast. Fire grate does not cover enough of the area under the grates. Old fire box design was far superior. I extend to have a fire grate made like the old design. I am going to seal the cover to cooker with a gasket and install adjustable air vents to control the fire. I had my original CB940 for almost 15 years and it was great unit. With this units heavy metal construction, and the modifications I plan to make it should cook well and last a long time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bad to the bones that's a good thing Love it! Got some shortcomings that I knew about before I bought it. None was a real deal breaker. I won't waste time rehashing them because the shortcomings have been already reviewed by others. I will continue to love my Weber 26.5" kettle grill but the honeymoon ended soon after the CB940X arrived. The Weber and I haven't been together since. The Weber and I are in therapy now. We won't split up but we may only see each other during holidays and big events. Simply put the Charbroil CB940X is the best charcoal grill for price out there and I did my homework. I don't consider myself a pro but my friends and neighbors do. Oh and must mention the customer service was top notched. As good as Webers. I guess you can see I'm a Weber man been one for more than 30 year and only had 2 grills from them. But I cook on my Charbroil way more often. I have two darn good grills but only use one on a daily basis. If you need a nuts and bolts review this ain't the one to read but if you are a real outdoor cook who uses you grill like it's a stove you understand me. Last word, DO what the instructions say DO in regards to maintaining it. Keep that oil brushed on the inside of it and keep that ash catcher clean plus DO buy yourself a CHARBROIL COVER for it they sell two different ones that fit like a glove. DON'T Wait til later buy it when you buy the grill. You'll see why. You can thank me later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big Daddy! Outstanding charcoal grill. The standard by which all other grills are judged. I have owned 2 over the past 30 years and wouldn't use anything else. The heavy cast iron construction maintains heat well. There are 4 settings for adjusting the coals so you can cook everything from steaks to boston butts. The only negative thing I can say is, it is difficult to attach the top to the base without having 2 men. One must hold the top while one attaches the hooks to the top and the base at the same time. It is very difficult and took me up to 30 minutes each time. It looks easy but it ISN'T. The grill is definitely worth the hassle of attaching the top though. It might be worth it to have Charbroil assemble it if the fee is reasonable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely the best!! Just bought the grill on 5JUL2014. Have wanted one since I saw my friend's in 1978. For one reason or another I never had purchased one. Over fifty years I have had Weber kettles, Weber gas, a couple of stainless JennAires all of which pale next to the 940. I am 68 years old and assembled it myself even though it was a bit fussy. Cooks great!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best charcoal grill I have ever owned! Very pleased with this grill. Big enough to smoke racks of ribs whole, perfect for indirect/searing also. Plenty of room to grill an entire meal at once. Holds temperature with few adjustments.

You claim that this grill is not compatible to use with a rotisserie, yet you have notches cut into the bottom of the lid with screw holes on either side of the notches. The older models support rotisseries, why not this one? And why the holes in lid?

Asked by: djh13
The holes on the sides of the lid are to allow for proper air ventilation. Please take another look the sides of the firebox of this grill. There are not holes in this grill that would support a rotisserie.

Need thoughts on cleaning this grill with easy off oven cleaner. Thanks.

Asked by: CarlosFlats
Easy-Off Oven Cleaner is not designed for grills. To best clean we recommend a nylon brush and warm soapy water or biodegradable grill cleaner. Our grill cleaning wipes (model # 3629294) will also work well to clean your grill.
