My T36 Infrared is 2 years old, and the grill is always covered after use. I keep grates and panels coated with vegetable oil, treat them with Charbroil's products and they still get rusted constantly. Obviously the light coating of porcelain put on the grates at the factory doesn't do its job and is proven to me to be a waste of product. You may want to use a wire grill brush to remove some of the flaking, along with the grate cleaning tool, but I'd never use a grinder on the grates. By doing so, they will deteriorate in a flash -- guaranteed. I use the grate tool on the grates and panels, wash them in soapy water, and then put them back on the grill. I heat the grill to dry the parts and then brush them lightly with vegetable oil.
