Thanksgiving menu planning is in full swing. I am pinning this and Googling that, debating what creative new recipe I am going to add to the table. My problem has always been that I have a small family and need for a small, and yet holiday worthy, menu. Prepping a huge meal just isn’t cost effective. And, really, even after a week of leftovers it’s impossible to eat a full turkey between the two of us.

This year I am scaling it back and really keeping both my budget and my clean up to a minimum. A turkey breast is significantly smaller than a full bird and can be prepped and ready a lot faster. And that means I can add a side or two to the holiday menu without worrying that I am overwhelming myself. With a quick rub of brown sugar and spice and a sticky glaze at the end, this smoked turkey breast is easy and leaves my oven open for pie — which, even for a small family, is an absolute must.

    For the Turkey
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 5 - 7 pound turkey breast
  • Apple juice for spritzing
  • For the glaze
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons good bourbon

Instructions

  1. Prep your Digital Electric Smoker for smoking at 220 degrees with soaked wood chips.
  2. Whisk the brown sugar, salt, pepper, cumin, cayenne and paprika in a bowl. Pat the turkey breast dry with towels and season liberally with the rub. Pat the rub to hold in place.
  3. Arrange the turkey on the grate in the smoker and allow to smoke until it registers 165 degrees internal temperature, spritzing every 30 minutes with apple juice if desired. Remove the turkey and cover it loosely with foil to rest.
  4. In a small saucepan over low heat, whisk the maple syrup and bourbon together. Allow to cook until thick and sticky.
  5. Brush the sauce liberally over the turkey before slicing and serving.

  1. Do you have an estimated time for cooking a 7 pound turkey breast in an electric smoker in order to reach 165 internal degrees. First time smoking a turkey breast

    1. Hi Teresa, if you smoke the turkey breast at 220-225F, it will take about 45 minutes per pound to cook until the internal temperature reaches 165F. For a 7 pound turkey, you will be smoking it for around 5 1/2 hours.
