Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Kamander Made Me a Great Smoker! For several years I've enjoyed the culinary benefits of a great friend's ambitious and skillful art smoking all types of meat, fowl and fish, breads and homemade pizzas. As I observed and listened, he shared two important recommendations, "Allow the process to take time, smoked meat should remain in the smoker/grill for several hours, never overheat and always monitor the temperature." He also preached, "Never purchase a smoker that costs less then $1000, quality and taste won't be similar in less expensive units!" Well, when I was offered an opportunity to receive the new Char-Broil Kamander Charcoal Grill for writing a candid review of its performance, I knew the final opinion of my smoking expert friend would be the indicator and confirmation of my own opinion. The unit is easy to assemble, the pieces are packed neatly in the carton allowing the less strong to remove individual parts with ease. Instructions and diagrams are straight forward, offering those who have difficulty assembling larger items to complete swiftly. I must admit, I took my time to experiment with a variety of meats, making sure to practice and adjust the grilling elements as well as the amount and variety of coals and specialty woods. I was amazed how quick and easy I learned. I've spent years using gas grills yet had an unsatisfied passion to purchase a smoker, however, always believing good smoking required a large investment. My new Kamander proves my theory is wrong! I started "small" using minimal amounts of solid fuels, I made sure my temperatures were within range, I followed the well-written instructions and I took the time to observe and remain near my smoker the entire time it was in action. Knowing my friend smokes even during cold snow storms, I practiced in both colder NE Ohio March temperatures as well as unexpected earlier then normal Spring temps, and both outcomes equaled success, culminating in perfectly cooked, moist, "meat falling off the bone" excellence. I surprised my friend and his wife this past Saturday, inviting them to dinner to join my wife and I for a tasty pork loin. I must also admit, my wife is the master of our kitchen, thus, our friends were expecting a meal prepared by her, in the oven. When the perfectly prepared pork loin was served, my friend's face appeared questionable, he immediately knew the vivid texture, aroma and flavor of the meat was not the result of our oven. When I told and showed him the compact design of my Kamander, explained the ease of learning and mentioned the surprisingly economical price of the unit, he chuckled and remarked, "Tim, I take back what I told you about never trusting a smoker costing less then $1000!" I am so pleased with this new addition to our culinary equipment. My wife, who never was fond of smoked meats has become a fan, I now will enjoy my summer taking time to master the slowness of smoking while at the same time enjoying more time in Mother Nature. I can truly say I'm now enjoying the best tasting meats I've ever prepared, thanks to the design and well-built quality of my new Char-Broil Kamander Charcoal Grill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoking is a breeze Love it. Controlling the air flow is a piece of cake without having to bend down. Cleaning is also easy with the simple lift out of the ash pan. The right lump makes a difference as well. Some are more easily controlled than others and burn better. Two thumbs up on this Kamander. The shelf is huge and folds down easy when putting the grill away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tasting Food! I recently got a Kamander Charcoal Grill and I am really enjoying it. The grill took about 1.5 hours to put together, and was not too difficult to do. I have used propane gas grills for the past 20 years, and decided that I wanted to go back to charcoal as I believe it makes certain foods taste better. So far I have used the grill 3 times. The first thing I cooked was hamburgers, and I was not disappointed with the taste. Not having used a charcoal grill in many years, it took some getting used to. There are 2 separate vents that are adjustable and help to control the temperature of the grill. Make sure when cooking hamburgers, hotdogs and steaks that you take out the drip pan (which is used for indirect heat cooking). I found that using a Charcoal Chimney Starter also made it much easier to getting the coals to light. I didn’t want to use lighter fluid, as I have found that it affects the taste. Same goes for the easy light charcoal that already has the lighter fluid in it. Avoid those and use basic charcoal and a chimney starter for better tasting food. The next thing I tried was smoking some pork. I smoked a pork shoulder butt for about 12 hours. It came out so good that I may never go out to a restaurant for BBQ pork sandwiches again. Again, if you are new to smoking meat or cooking with charcoal, it will take some learning and some trial and error, but it is well worth it. The latest thing I cooked on the grill was a couple of steaks. Everything I have cooked so far has been great. Again, cooking on charcoal gives you a much richer taste then cooking with propane. This grill has wheels which makes it very easy for moving around to different locations if needed. It also has a side shelf which makes it extremely convenient to place your platters, water bottle or food you will be grilling. This grill seems very durable and just as high of quality as other similar types of grills that sell for twice the amount of this grill. I also enjoy the appearance of the grill as it has the dome type top and not the traditional look of a charcoal grill. There is a temperature gauge on the lid that makes it very handy for keeping track of where the temperature is so you can make adjustments and control the temp while cooking. Of course, this is not the typical charcoal grill as it cooks, smokes and bakes. The one negative I have on the grill is that the manufacturer put a large sticker on the side shelf that was almost impossible to take off. I had to use Goo Gone and spend at least an hour working to get the sticker off. Other than the sticker, my experience with the grill has been positive and I would recommend this grill to anyone. I am so happy that I have this grill and look forward to grilling & smoking many different meats with it. This item was sent as a free sample in exchange for my review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality construction To begin with this grill is the assembly. I’m a very mechanically inclined person and I spent 53 minutes from opening the box to grill ready to use. The instructions were good and easy to follow. The one item was that in Section 1 while the photo shows leg placement of the wheel legs and the capped leg it didn’t indicate this was important. I had to swap two legs once I realized this. The fasteners were well labeled. So on the bad side the small flimsy clips that holds the sealing ring onto the lids probably won’t last. Most of my sealing ring was dislodged as received so I reinstalled it. Other than the sealing ring the rest of the grill appears to be well built. The last and pretty big issue with is that it came with a very large sticker on the table top. This was very hard to get off and really wasn’t necessary. A nice flyer taped to this surface would of done fine. Whoever dreamed this up should get out of their cubicle and go out and remove a few to see what a pain it is. I’m a gas grill guy and haven’t used charcoal in decades. I followed the direction and fired the grill up to season it. I used this time to play with the temperature settings and found I didn’t have much control. Next I prepped a pork loin to smoke. I fired up the grill with some instant light charcoal briquettes and some wood chips. As per the directions once the temp went past 100 I closed they vents down to 1.5. The temperature continued to rise so I closed the vents completely off which seem to have no effect. As time went the grill settled in the 350-400 range. I tried burping out the heat a number of times and also several positions like the intake completely closed but smoke open. Still no control on heat. I also tried a towel over the intake vent thinking it might be leaking air in. So this trial ended in baking the lion. Ok round 2 time to grill some steaks. So the instructions recommended to use lump charcoal so I bought a bag of this. Well this requires you to turn on the survivalist skills to get it to light without fluid or a chimney. But with enough work I got a fire going. Once it was going well I closed the list and let the temp approach 600. Then I closed the vents to 3.5. The temp kept going and at 700 I opened the grill to let some heat out and also adjusted the vents to 2.5. I continued to play with the vents trying to get a constant temperature but once the grilling started with the opening and closing of the list to load and turn the steaks it varied from 550 to 700. The steaks turned out very good but looks like I still need some practice for a charcoal grill. On round three I had a much better time lighting the lump charcoal without fluid or a chimney. Once I had a good fire going I closed the lid and set the vents to 1 as soon as I closed the lid. The grill got to 400 to 450. This time I was doing brats and chicken breasts. The grill seem to settle in to this temp and I didn’t change any venting. I made quick checks for temp and turning. They turned out well. So for final conclusion, the results do provide a bit more smoky/charcoal taste versus a gas grill so this is a plus. I can’t say I got the hang of the controls and able to keep the grill at temps. I will be practicing more as I’d like to smoke some items more at the 200 degree ranges. This item was sent free as a sample in exchange for my review.

Does the air intake seal with a gasket at the bottom of the grill, or is the fit very tight in some way? I'm wondering if I would need to add a high temp silicone sealant to be able to shut down the fire by closing the intake vent. Thanks

How do you add more solid fuel if needed while cooking?

Unless you are doing a REALLY long cook it shouldn't be necessary. I honestly can imagine a cook lasting more than 10-12 hours.

I am looking at possibly getting a Char-Broil Kamander. I currently have a Char griller Akorn and love it. Does your grill support the use of electroinic temp control units such as the pitmaster or bbq-iq?

Hello everyone ,having used propane BBQ s over the years and very little charcoal and never on a Kamado ,I was just wondering how smokey does the food in this machine taste ?I want to get one of these grills ,but I never tried the food from it.
