Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Kamander Made Me a Great Smoker! For several years I've enjoyed the culinary benefits of a great friend's ambitious and skillful art smoking all types of meat, fowl and fish, breads and homemade pizzas. As I observed and listened, he shared two important recommendations, "Allow the process to take time, smoked meat should remain in the smoker/grill for several hours, never overheat and always monitor the temperature." He also preached, "Never purchase a smoker that costs less then $1000, quality and taste won't be similar in less expensive units!" Well, when I was offered an opportunity to receive the new Char-Broil Kamander Charcoal Grill for writing a candid review of its performance, I knew the final opinion of my smoking expert friend would be the indicator and confirmation of my own opinion. The unit is easy to assemble, the pieces are packed neatly in the carton allowing the less strong to remove individual parts with ease. Instructions and diagrams are straight forward, offering those who have difficulty assembling larger items to complete swiftly. I must admit, I took my time to experiment with a variety of meats, making sure to practice and adjust the grilling elements as well as the amount and variety of coals and specialty woods. I was amazed how quick and easy I learned. I've spent years using gas grills yet had an unsatisfied passion to purchase a smoker, however, always believing good smoking required a large investment. My new Kamander proves my theory is wrong! I started "small" using minimal amounts of solid fuels, I made sure my temperatures were within range, I followed the well-written instructions and I took the time to observe and remain near my smoker the entire time it was in action. Knowing my friend smokes even during cold snow storms, I practiced in both colder NE Ohio March temperatures as well as unexpected earlier then normal Spring temps, and both outcomes equaled success, culminating in perfectly cooked, moist, "meat falling off the bone" excellence. I surprised my friend and his wife this past Saturday, inviting them to dinner to join my wife and I for a tasty pork loin. I must also admit, my wife is the master of our kitchen, thus, our friends were expecting a meal prepared by her, in the oven. When the perfectly prepared pork loin was served, my friend's face appeared questionable, he immediately knew the vivid texture, aroma and flavor of the meat was not the result of our oven. When I told and showed him the compact design of my Kamander, explained the ease of learning and mentioned the surprisingly economical price of the unit, he chuckled and remarked, "Tim, I take back what I told you about never trusting a smoker costing less then $1000!" I am so pleased with this new addition to our culinary equipment. My wife, who never was fond of smoked meats has become a fan, I now will enjoy my summer taking time to master the slowness of smoking while at the same time enjoying more time in Mother Nature. I can truly say I'm now enjoying the best tasting meats I've ever prepared, thanks to the design and well-built quality of my new Char-Broil Kamander Charcoal Grill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Duel Controls make tempature control a breeze !! So I was walking through my local supermarket and saw this bad boy. I couldn't resist picking it up. On my first attempt I cooked a brisket and it turned out amazing. I cooked it for 8 hours at 275 and I'll tell you not one piece was left. It came out so good I had to cook something on it the very next day, so I settled on a bacon explosion. 2 hours at 300 degrees and BAM ! it came out perfect. I can't wait to try something else on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from all the features of the big boys, at a value price The Kamander grill is Char Broil's entry into Big Green Egg/Kamado territory, and it's a winner. I was sent this grill as a sample in exchange for my review. I've only had this thing a week, and I have yet to a) smoke a piece of meat correctly or to b) make something that wasn't absolutely delicious. Those two statements may seem contradictory. Let me break it down. TEMPERATURE CONTROL I'm new to charcoal smoking, and keeping the temp low, it turns out, is an important skill to master. I'm getting there. My first attempt, I lit the charcoal and walked away. When I returned, the temp had soared to 700, and I could only get the temp down to 500. So my smoked chicken turned out to be a roasted chicken. It was amazing. It still was smoky, and juicy, and awesome. I can't wait to see what it's like when I smoke it 4 hours instead of roast it 1.5. My second attempt, I tried a pork butt. This time, I turned the dampers down much sooner, but still not soon enough. Again, it cooked too fast, again it was delicious. I am a bad direction follower. The instruction guide is clear: when it hits 100 degrees below target temp, turn it down. I have yet to do this. The damper controls are pretty neat. Looking at other smokers similarly priced and higher, many of them have only one damper at the top. The dual dampers, according to Char Broil, help you lock in your temp more easily. The other amazing this about this, and other much more expensive, smokers is the double-wall insulation. I smoked that chicken in the snow and 25 degree temps. It stayed at 450 degrees the whole time. When I opened it, the temp dropped but then went right back to 450 as soon as I closed the lid. I am confident the promise of easy low-temperature control will be fulfilled when I finally pay attention and follow instructions. If this site allows edits, I will report back later. DURABILITY This thing seems solid. Putting it together was very straightforward, and took me about an hour, which included searching for the one Phillips screwdriver in the house. It's heavy and looks like it's going to last. I'm not a fan of where the wheels are located, it seems like they should be on the end instead. But I don't plan on dragging it anywhere other than out of the garage and back, and for that it works well. EASE OF USE/CLEANUP I like the compact size. It stows in a corner of the garage nicely. It comes with a grate puller tool, which makes removing the small grate to add charcoal a snap. The drip pan is easy to remove and clean, and the ash pan has a handle for easy removal. VALUE This is my first smoker. I love it. I haven't use a Big Green Egg or Kamado. For my purposes (smoking on the weekend for small groups), this fits the bill perfectly. It retails at $349, but my local supermarket has its regular price for it at $299. I have a gas grill that I'll still pull out for quick hits like hot dogs, but I see me firing this up this summer even for things like burger and steaks. I know I'm really good and cooking things fast, and I'm looking forward to getting better and better and slowing things down.

My last grill was an Acorn Kamado cooker the quality of the materials and longevity was disappointing, only 3 years and completely rusted out. Is the Kamander porcelain coated? ash and drip pan quality, fire grate? Thanks. Can I expect better quality?

Asked by: leatherneck
Among other things, the Kamander has Char-Broil’s unique styling and incorporates new and patent pending technology to provide the user with convenient and innovative control over the cooking process. This unit will be an insulated, double-wall steel grill and it will utilize a porcelain coated cast iron cooking grate. There is not a set lifespan for parts of the grill as their life will depend on many factors including grilling frequency, climate, and upkeep. On the Kammander will you be adding accessories? Specifically, people are looking for a way to easily configure simultaneous direct and indirect/2 zone cooking. Something similar to the Kamado Joe divide and conquer cooking grates would be neat.

Asked by: Kamadodude
2 accessory items will be available for the Kamander™ grill in late May. Model number 9586965R04 – Kamander™ Stone (a pizza stone made of cordierite) and model number 7527387P04 – Kamander™ Cover. Please give us a call at 1-800-241-7548 for more information.

I am seriously considering this or the Akorn. The Akorn has a 5 year warranty which is very hard to overlook and communicates they believe in the quality of their product. Why does Char-Broil only offer a 1 year warranty? That is a huge difference.

Asked by: Nate94
Our warranties are going to vary from part to part and from grill to grill. However, if an issue is ever encountered with one of our products please give us a call at 1-800-241-7548 and we will be able to best assist.
